Dr. Richard Dasher is Director of the US-Asia Technology Management Center at Stanford University, and has been so since 1994. During that time he has been a pillar in the US-Asia business, technology and academic community, and has welcomed countless visitors and newcomers to the Valley to his office at Stanford. In this special event, he will share insights on the waves of innovation he has seen over multiple business cycles – what works, what doesn’t, and how corporate venture teams can best engage with the Valley.
Jon Metzler, well known Silicon Valley consultant and Haas School of Business lecturer, will moderate this exciting program.

Richard B. Dasher, Stanford University
Dr. Richard Dasher has been the Director of the US-Asia Technology Management Center at Stanford University since 1994. During that time he has been a pillar in the US-Asia business, technology and academic community, and has welcomed countless visitors and newcomers to the Valley and Stanford. In this special event, he will share insights on the waves of innovation he has seen over multiple business cycles – what works, what doesn’t, and how corporate venture teams can best engage with the Valley.
Dr. Dasher serves on the advisory boards for national universities and research institutions in Japan and Thailand. He is on the selection and review committees of major government funding programs for science, technology, and innovation and in Canada and Japan. He is an advisor to start-up companies, business accelerators, venture capital firms, and nonprofits in Silicon Valley, China, Japan, and S. Korea. Dr. Dasher was the first non-Japanese person ever asked to join the governance of a Japanese national university, serving as a Board Director and member of the Management Council of Tohoku University from 2004 – 2010. Dr. Dasher received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics from Stanford University. From 1986 – 90, he was Director of the U.S. State Department’s Advanced Language and Area Training Centers in Japan and Korea that provide full-time curricula to U.S. and Commonwealth Country diplomats assigned to those countries.
Jon Metzler, Blue Field Strategies
Jon Metzler is the Japan Society board chairman. By day, he is the President of Blue Field Strategies, a consulting firm supporting US and Japanese clients, with a focus on innovation acceleration. Jon has launch experience in print and online media, services, edtech, wireless, geolocation and more. Jon is also a lecturer at the Haas School of Business, where he teaches on IT Strategy and on business in Japan. He is also associated faculty for the UC-Berkeley Center for Japanese Studies.
