Cultural Workshop: Japanese Tea Tasting

Would you like a cup of tea?  お茶はいかがですか。

Nihon-cha 日本茶, Japanese tea, referred to as green tea, is the most common beverage in Japan. Japanese enjoy various kinds of green tea, hot and cold, throughout the year. Even after western food has highly influenced Japanese cuisine, green tea remains essential to the Japanese food culture.

In cooperation with LUPICIA Fresh Tea, the Japan Society is proud to present our Cultural Experience Workshop: Japanese Tea Tasting (Introductory Course) This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about Japanese tea in a friendly atmosphere.

Ms. Kyoko Hori Tieu, Regional Manager of LUPICIA Fresh Tea, will give us a brief lecture of Nihon-cha, followed by tasting of five different types of green tea: Sencha (medium quality green tea), Gyokuro (refined green tea), Hojicha (roasted green tea)  Genmaicha (tea mixed with roasted brown rice) and Matcha (powdered green tea) At the end of the evening, participants can enjoy conversation over sweets and a cup of tea.

This event has limited space and registration is first come first served. Please register early to ensure your spot in the workshop.

Ms. Kyoko Hori Tieu
Kyoko is a Regional Manager at LUPICIA Fresh Tea, also supervising San Francisco Centre Store since 2005. She has a certificate as a Japanese Green Tea Advisor by the Nihoncha Instructor Association. Born in Japan and has lived abroad in Europe, Australia, Japan and North America, she experienced the different ways tea is enjoyed in various cultures.

LUPICIA Fresh Tea
Lupicia started out in Japan in 1994 and actually began as two separate tea stores. First as a black tea specialty store called “L’epicier”, meaning grocery store in French. Then a few years later a specialty tea store offering green teas from China and Japan called “緑碧茶園Lu Pi Cha En”, meaning jade green tea garden in Chinese, was opened.

In 2005 the company decided to become a purveyor of world teas and combined the two stores and the two names resulting in the name “LUPICIA”. In a sense, it is a blending of cultures that envisions the hope to spread the wonderful flavors of tea and a tea drinking culture throughout the world. There are three store locations in the Bay Area: San Francisco Centre, Valley Fair (Santa Clara) and Mitsuwa Marketplace (San Jose)
