SUMMARY:Masaaki Suzuki Conducts J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned Bach specialist leads Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in a monumental work for double chorus and orchestra. \nSister period-music ensembles the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir—the gold standard in Baroque performance for decades—join forces with conductor Masaaki Suzuki for a very special US performance of Bach’s crowning masterpiece during its 300th anniversary year. The majestic and powerfully dramatic St. Matthew Passion sets the 26th and 27th chapters of the Bible’s Gospel of Matthew to music with interspersed chorales and arias\, and is scored for massive forces: a double choir\, double orchestra\, and vocal soloists. Bach’s transcendent oratorio conveys the story’s intense human drama and moral dilemma\, as recounted here by featured soloists Nick Pritchard as the Evangelist and Florian Störtz as Jesus. \nThis is a co-promotional event in our inaugural Arts from Japan Season\, presented by our partner\, Cal Performances. For this co-promotional performance we’ve secured a limited block of premium tickets reserved for our members and friends\, so we can experience this concert together. \nThese tickets are offered for sale first to our Arts from Japan Founding Donors\, then to our Leadership Circle\, and then to our broader membership as availability allows. Once our allotment is purchased\, we’re happy to connect our members directly to our partner’s box office\, where a member discount rate is often available.
