SUMMARY:Unlocking Japan: Journeys Beyond the Guidebook
DESCRIPTION:*In-person program \nJapan offers endless ways to explore — from vibrant cities to historic towns\, quiet countryside\, coastal scenery\, and hidden regional treasures. But with so many choices\, planning the perfect trip can feel overwhelming. Join us for this special travel program designed to help you imagine and plan your dream trip to Japan\, emphasizing scenic ways to travel. \nWe’ll be joined by Japanet\, who will share information about their English-friendly cruises. Their tours appeal even to Japanese locals and seasoned travelers\, focusing on deep cultural immersion — stops at unique ports of call\, such as their hometown of Nagasaki\, spanning from the subtropical Okinawa in the south up to Hakodate in the northern island of Hokkaido\, and access to traditional cultural experiences like sumo training\, daily rajio taiso (radio calisthenics)\, and more. \nJapan travel enthusiast Miguel Concepcion will share some of his travel experiences in Japan and offer recommendations for putting together an unforgettable visit. Pulling from decades of visits\, Miguel will share advice as well as highlights from his recent roadtrip spanning Shizuoka\, Gifu\, Aichi\, Fukui\, Ishikawa\, Nagano\, and Yamanashi. \nRepresenting the California-Japan Sister Cities Network\, Meg Mizutani will discuss the strong bonds between our two regions and why your sister city may be a great addition to your dream Japan trip itinerary. She’ll also share information and photos from  the Sunnyvale Sister City Association‘s adult exchange trip to Iizuka (Fukuoka). \nWe will also save time for fellow travelers and attendees to share their secret spots and latest tips to help guide your trip\, so bring your questions (and answers!) to the program.

SUMMARY:Some Nostalgic Place: The Films of Isao Takahata at BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive for a summer film series. \nDespite his sixty-year career as a director of hand-drawn animation\, Isao Takahata (1935–2018) would be the first to say\, “I myself really don’t draw.” He instead took pride in selecting talented animators and steering them toward his vision. Not being tied to his own style of drawing allowed him to transition from the maximalist fantasy of Pom Poko (1994) to the sketchlike\, comic-strip minimalism of My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)\, and the impressionistic watercolor and charcoal renderings of his final film\, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013). Of his process with the animators\, Takahata said\, “I really get involved in the details of their drawings\, and then have them draw and [I] check those drawings\, and work collaboratively in that fashion.” His attention to detail reveals itself in the reverence his films have for both the natural world and the present-tense\, unremarked-upon moments in life\, such as the family in Only Yesterday (1991) learning how to properly slice a pineapple. \nTakahata cofounded Studio Ghibli along with his protégé\, friend\, and rival Hayao Miyazaki in 1985. He worked slowly; Miyazaki referred to him as a giant sloth but was also quick to point out that “sloths actually have very sharp claws.” With his first animated feature for the studio\, he challenged the preconceived notions of the medium with the unrelenting antiwar film Grave of the Fireflies (1988). Takahata pushed feature animation into uncharted territories\, and as Miyazaki remarked in his eulogy for his friend\, “he never bent the knee to anyone or anything.” \n—Jeff Griffith-Perham\, Associate Film Curator at the BAMPFA \nScreenings:\n*Please see the BAMPFA website for the most up-to-date listings and screentimes \nThursday\, July 2nd @ 7:00 PM | Only Yesterday\nSunday\, July 5th @ 4:00 PM | Only Yesterday\nSaturday\, July 11th @ 1:30 PM | Grave of the Fireflies\nSaturday\, July 18th @ 3:30 PM | The Tale of The Princess Kaguya\nSunday\, July 19th @ 5:00 PM | Gauche the Cellist\nSaturday\, July 25th @ 3:00 PM | The Story of Yanagawa Waterway\nSaturday\, August 1st @ 4:00 PM | My Neighbors the Yamadas\nSaturday\, August 22nd @ 3:30 PM | Pom Poko\nSunday\, August 23rd @ 2:00 PM | My Neighbor Totoro\nSunday\, August 23rd @ 4:30 PM | Grave of the Fireflies\nFriday\, August 28th @ 4:00 PM | The Tale of The Princess Kaguya
