SUMMARY:FREE EVENT: Book Talk | "A Christian in the Land of the Gods\," by Joanna Shelton
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public! Space is Limited.\nPlease come to the Kinokuniya book store in Japan Town on April 25 at 6:00PM to hear author and former US trade official Joanna Reed Shelton talk about her book\, A Christian in the Land of the Gods\, the remarkable story of her great-grandfather who was a Christian missionary in Meiji Japan.  In November 1877\, three months after Emperor Meiji’s conscript army of commoners defeated forces led by Japan’s famous “last samurai\,” the Reverend Tom Alexander and his new wife\, Emma\, arrived in Japan\, a country where practicing Christianity had been punishable by death until 1868. Joanna’s book offers an intimate view of the hardships and challenges faced by nineteenth-century missionaries working to plant their faith in a country just emerging from two and a half centuries of self-imposed seclusion. The narrative takes place against the backdrop of wrenching change in Japan and the jockeying for territory and influence by foreign powers in East Asia\, as seen through the eyes of a Presbyterian missionary from East Tennessee. \nPlease come to this FREE program.  Copies of the A Christian in the Land of the Gods\, as well as the Japanese-language version\, Watashi-no Kazoku-no Meiji Nihon (My Family in Meiji Japan) will be available for sale. A light meal will be provided. Space is limited\, so register here now or bottom of this page! \n\n\nPROGRAM SCHEDULE:\n6:00 – 6:30: Registration\, Networking\n6:30 – 7:30: Interview and Audience Q&A\n7:30 – 7:45: Networking \n\nSPEAKER PROFILE:\nJoanna Shelton teaches\, lectures\, and writes on economic policy issues\, drawing on her long public service at national and international levels. She writes a monthly column for the Missoulian newspaper\, has written for the New York Times\, and has appeared on radio and television in the United States and abroad. SUMMARY:Japan's Society 5.0 Plan and Hitachi's Vision of the Future of Technology
DESCRIPTION:In recent months\, dystopian views of technology have proliferated.  Social media violates citizen’s privacy and abets foreign meddling in our internal affairs.  AI threatens to replace the jobs not just of the low-skilled but the highly skilled.  Huge companies\, driven by the power of the network effect\, threaten competition and further distort income inequality.  Japan’s leaders see these dangers clearly but have a vision of using technology to create a much more positive future.  That approach is best illustrated in the Society 5.0 concept heralded by Hiroaki Nakanishi\, Chairman of the Keidanren (Japan’s Business Federation). \n \nSociety 5.0 is a detailed vision of the future where technology can be harnessed to free humans\, make them healthier and more fulfilled\, enable sustainable livelihood\, better protect them against natural disaster\, and ensure diversity and correct growing inequality.  The concept takes the 4th industrial technologies\, especially AI\, IoT and new forms of energy\, and creates a framework for harnessing them to meet human needs. \nCome hear Hitachi’s Yasuo Tanabe explain Society 5.0 and what it means in practical terms to his company\, which helped pioneer the concept.   As a former Government official\, an academic\, an experienced businessman\, and a graduate of Stanford who was advised by Professor Dan Okimoto\, Mr. Tanabe has a unique breadth of experience in the areas of trade\, energy and technology.  He is equally at home in the Bay Area as he is in Tokyo and is ideally perched at the senior-most levels of one of Japan’s largest companies.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear from one of Japan’s business leaders talking about the future of the human engagement with technology. \n\nEvent Schedule:\n\n5:30 – 6:00: Registration\n6:00 – 6:10: Welcome & Introduction\n6:10 – 7:10: Presentation and Q&A\n7:10 – 8:00: Refreshments & Networking\n\n\n\nSpeaker Profile:\n \nYasuo Tanabe\nSpecial Representative for External Relations\, Hitachi\, Ltd. \nWith former posts in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Japan\, the Economic Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan\, Yasuo Tanabe is an Alumnus of Stanford University with experience in areas of trade\, energy\, and technology. Following his retirement from the Japanese government in 2010\, Mr. Tanabe has worked in various roles at Hitachi\, Ltd. and is now the Special Representative for External Relations. \n  \n\n  \nEvent venue generously provided by Skadden\, Arps\, Meagher\, and Flom LLP \n\n \n  \n\n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite\n\n

As the son of two railway employees—his father a railroad worker and his mother a local station’s telephone operator—Sakurai grew up surrounded by trains as a child\, which naturally nurtured his enthusiasm. This fascination developed into a love for railroad photography in junior high school when he took his first train photos using a twin-lens reflex camera. And at a young age\, he soon became a paid contributor to “Railway Journal\,” a leading magazine in Japan for railroad enthusiasts. \nAfter working for the photography department of a major Japanese publisher\, Sakurai decided to became a freelance photojournalist in 1990. Then in 1993\, he participated for the first time as a member of the Japanese media team in the “Champagne Charlie International Footsteps Race”—a 100-day race around the world using only trains\, ships\, and other modes of transportation aside from aircraft—circumnavigating the globe in only 88 days. In 2017\, Sakurai began serving as a visiting professor at Tokyo College of Transport Studies which uniquely offers specialized courses specific to trains and transportations\, attracting students from all corners of Japan who are interested in pursuing careers in those industries. \nIn pursuit of railroad photography\, Sakurai has not only traveled extensively throughout Japan\, but has also visited 95 countries\, authoring or co-authoring nearly 100 articles on trains along the way.\nCurrently\, he is a regular contributor to several photography- and railway-related publications. And admittedly\, his favorite foods are the specialty boxed meals found at train stations across Japan known as “ekiben.” \n  \n\n\nIn cooperation with: \n \nVenue generously provided by: \n \nCatering provided by Kawashima’s Kitchen \n \n  \n\n\n  \n\nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Tennis Classic Kids Day Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The Japan Society of Northern California is pleased to announce a volunteer opportunity to help the USTA in hosting the annual Kids Day at the opening of the WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Tennis Classic (fka the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford)\, part of the women’s US Open Series\, with tennis stars from around the globe. \nKids Day is a longstanding USTA Norcal tradition of engaging kids in sports\, a critical formula to promoting success through fitness and education for kids in the community. The Kids Day activities include interviews with WTA players\, Q&A\, and lunch and tickets for the kids to watch some competitive matches\, for many the first time seeing a tennis match! This year\, less than 360 days away\, the Summer Olympics comes to Tokyo after 56 years\, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the community and share not only the vision\, spirit and values of the Olympics with the kids\, but also the opportunity to talk about Japan\, the host country. \nAfter having successfully gathered volunteers for the 2019 Prefontaine Diamond Classic\, the premier Track and Field meet at Stanford University on June 30 and our first activity to celebrate the 2020 Games\, the Japan Society has again offered to invite volunteers to support USTA Norcal’s Kids Day. \nPlease come and immerse yourself in the world of tennis while enjoying a fun day with the kids in the midst of some high-level competition! \n  \n \n\nClick here for the Background Consent Form. It must be filled out and sent to duenas-bielser@norcal.usta.com after registration.\n  \nPlease note the following:\n1. You must be at least 16 years old to be a volunteer. \nAdditional Information:\n1. A Background Form must be filled out and sent to Silvia Duenas-Bielser @ duenas-bielser@norcal.usta.com.\n2. Here’s a map of the layout from last year. Kids Day will be on the baseball field (#2).  There’s a short walkway from the KD site to the stadium where matches are being played. As you can see\, the site is pretty compact. \n \n  \n*Safe Sport \nConsistent abuse-prevention training across the Olympic Movement’s 50 national governing bodies is critical for keeping athletes safe and ensuring that adults who work with youth clearly understand their roles and responsibilities\,” said Shellie Pfohl\, CEO of the U.S. Center for SafeSport. “The Center appreciates USTA’s commitment\, leadership and support of putting an athlete’s well-being first and creating respectful sport environments across the country.” \n  \n \nThe Japan Society of Northern California created the Road to Tokyo 2020 Initiative to help raise awareness of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in the Bay Area through sports and strengthen the bridge between the Bay Area and Japan. It is driven by volunteers who have a passion and interests in Japan\, sports\, and culture and are dedicated to creating even stronger ties of friendship between the Bay Area and Japan. \nThe Road to Tokyo 2020 Initiative focuses on developing a series of programs\, sporting activities\, and community engagement until next summer to generate the excitement and spirit towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Additionally\, they create the opportunity to visit and enjoy the beauties\, cuisines\, history\, and culture of Japan. The programs will continue to strengthen the already firm foundation of US-Japan friendship that has been built over the past 70 years of close engagement and fellowship.

SUMMARY:Implications for Corporate Governance in Japan in the Aftermath of the Ghosn Case
DESCRIPTION:The arrest and extended detention of business legend Carlos Ghosn has rocked the global business world\, sparking debate about the state of Japanese corporate governance\, Japan’s criminal justice system\, Nissan’s internal controls and\, of course\, Carlos Ghosn himself. \nHow is the Ghosn affair being viewed in Japan and abroad? Will the case affect how foreign companies perceive the investment climate in Japan? Will the case lead to changes in Japanese corporate governance or justice system? \nJoin us for an in-depth discussion of the Ghosn case and its implications by two experts who have been following the matter closely. One of the experts is Glen S. Fukushima\, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington DC\, who splits his time between DC\, Tokyo\, and San Francisco. With his experience as a US trade official\, a Tokyo-based business executive\, and an academic\, he brings an insider’s perspective to this case. Susan Resley\, another expert\, leads the securities enforcement practice for Morgan Lewis\, a global law firm with offices in San Francisco and Tokyo. The discussion will be moderated by Nancy Yamaguchi\, Partner at Morgan Lewis and Japan Society board member. \nDon’t miss this timely and relevant program! \nMembers: $15 | Non-Members: $25 \nLunch will be provided. Susan D. SUMMARY:(SOLD OUT) Blind Soccer and the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on September 25 from 5:30 PM in Sunnyvale to learn about and play blind soccer\, a Paralympic sport for the visually impaired.  Shigeo Yoshihara\, a Blind Soccer player and multiple Paralympic medal winner\, and Masatoshi Kenmochi\, Partner\, Japan Blind Football Association\, will first explain blind soccer and its significance and then coach actual play for the first 32 participants to register.  Don’t miss this opportunity to meet one of Japan’s top Paralympians\, learn more about the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Games and the game of blind soccer\, as well as experience first-hand the sport itself. \nBlind soccer is an extremely exciting sport with rules similar to futsal. Each team fields five players who attempt to put the ball into their opponents’ goal while defending their own. Aside from the goalkeepers\, the players are blind or visually impaired and they wear eye patches and blindfolds to ensure that no one has an advantage.  The ball is equipped with a jingling noise to guide the players.  This very special event is generously supported by ANA\, a proud sponsor of Japanese National Blind Soccer Team who will be competing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. \n  \n \n\nVenue:\nFujitsu Campus Building H \n1240 E Arques Ave\, Sunnyvale\, CA 94085 \n\nSchedule:\n5:30 – 6:00pm Registration & Light meal\n6:00 – 6:05pm Opening Remark\n・Larry Greenwood | President\, Japan Society\n・Fumiyasu Hirose | Vice President & General Manager\, San Francisco/ San Jose Office\, ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS\n6:05 – 6:20pm What’s Blind Soccer?     Masatoshi Kenmochi | Partner\, Japan Blind Football Association & COO\, Criacao Corporation \n6:20 – 7:30pm Fun Time! \n7:30 – 8:00pm Networking and Dinner \n\nCoaches:\n \nShigeo Yoshihara\nBlind Soccer Player\, Blind Soccer Olympic Player\, Gold Paralympic Medalist \nKnown as a super star in the visually impaired sports field\, Yoshihara received the bronze medal for the high jump at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games\, the gold medal (world record at that time) for the 1km cycling competition at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics\, and the silver medal for track sprint tandem cycling at the 2004 Athens Games.  He started playing Blind Soccer in 2002 and was soon selected as a member of Japan’s national team. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMasatoshi Kenmochi\nPartner\, Japan Blind Football Association & COO\, Criacao Corporation \nAfter working at RobertWalters\, a San Francisco-based executive recruiting firm\, Kenmochi changed his career direction.
