She is a member of the Asia Pacific Management Committee and Goldman Sachs Japan Co.\, Ltd. Executive Committee. Kathy joined Goldman Sachs in 1994 and was named managing director in 1998 and partner in 2000.  Kathy has been ranked No. 1 in Japan Equity Strategy by Institutional Investor multiple times. She was chosen by The Wall Street Journal as one of the “10 Women to Watch in Asia” for her work on the “Womenomics” theme and was also named to Bloomberg Markets magazine’s “50 Most Influential” list in 2014. \nPrior to joining the firm\, Kathy was chief Japan strategist for Barclays de Zoete Wedd Securities for four years and worked at the Export-Import Bank of Japan’s Washington\, DC office for two years. She is a policy commentator for Japan’s Cabinet Office and has served on numerous Japanese government committees aimed at promoting gender diversity. \nKathy is a board member of the Asian University for Women (AUW) Support Foundation\, chair of the Board of Councilors (Japan) of the US-Japan Council\, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, a member of Keizai Doyukai and a trustee of The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. She also serves on the Advisory Council for the Japan Society Fund Against Breast Cancer. \nKathy earned an AB\, magna cum laude\, in Social Studies from Harvard University and an MA from Johns Hopkins University\, School of Advanced International Studies. SUMMARY:Kenichiro and Nobuko Sasae: A Lifetime of Building Stronger US-Japan Bridges
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special evening program to thank Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae and his wife Nobuko\, for their many contributions to building a healthy US-Japan relationship that underpins our mutual security and prosperity. Over their respective careers\, Ken and Nobuko have seen a remarkable evolution of that relationship\, from one in which Japan was viewed often as an economic competitor and a junior security partner in the 1980s to one today in which Japan is clearly an equal economic and security partner\, taking new leadership roles in the region and globally. \nFrom his time as Director in charge of US trade issues in the 1980s to his time 20 years later as Vice Minister\, the Ministry’s top bureaucratic post\, to his five years as Japanese Ambassador to the US\, Ken Sasae has worked tirelessly to resolve problems\, build friendships and deepen cooperation. Nobuko\, the other half of this power couple\, also maintained a unique bird’s-eye view of that evolution as one of Japan’s top professional interpreters. His distinguished and illustrious diplomatic career includes prestigious assignments as Executive Assistant to the Prime Minister\, Director-General of the Economic Affairs Bureau\, Director-General of the Asian & Oceania Affairs Bureau\, and Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. During his period of service in Tokyo\, he represented the Japanese Government in the Six-Party Talks on North Korean issues. He also worked as Political Director for the G-8 Summit. From 2012-2018\, he was Ambassador of Japan to the United States. Subsequently\, in July 2018\, Ambassador Sasae was appointed President of The Japan Institute of International Affairs to head Japan’s premier foreign affairs think tank. \nNobuko Sasae’s work as a high-level conference interpreter has taken her all around the world\, most recently to the East Asia Summit in Cambodia\, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meeting in Tokyo\, the Nikkei Future of Asia and the APEC Ministerial Meeting in Japan\, the COP 10 meeting in Nagoya\, and the World Economic Forum in China\, to name only a few. While in D.C. during her husband’s term as Ambassador of Japan to the U.S.\, Mrs. Sasae founded and moderated the bimonthly The Nobuko Forum\, which sought to empower young professional women through conversations with accomplished women. \nThey have two sons and love mountain hiking. \n  \nDr. Satu Limaye\n \nSatu Limaye is Director of the East West Center in Washington where he created and now directs the Asia Matters for America initiative and edits the Asia Pacific Bulletin. He is also Senior Advisor\, Center for Naval Analyses (CNA) and Senior Fellow on Asia History and Policy at the Foreign Policy Institute at Paul H. Nitze School of International Studies (SAIS). He is a magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgetown University and received his doctorate from Oxford University (Magdalen College) where he was a George C. Marshall Scholar. \nThough not a Japan specialist\, Japan has been key to Dr. Limaye’s professional work. Until he was named a Henry Luce Scholar and assigned to the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) in Tokyo\, Dr. Limaye primarily focused on the Middle East (Lebanon and Israel) and provided analytical support to Japanese utility companies with civil nuclear power programs.  He worked at JIIA for just over three years. His publications on Japan include Japan in a Dynamic Asia (co-edited with Yoichiro Sato)\, Tokyo’s Dynamic Diplomacy: Japan and India and Pakistan’s Nuclear Tests\, US-Japan Relations and Southeast Asia: Meeting Regional Demands\, and Japan and the Indian Ocean (forthcoming). \nEarlier\, Dr. Limaye served on the research staff of the Strategy\, Forces & Resources Division at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) and Director of Research & Publications at the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies. SUMMARY:Calligraphy in Color: Performance and Workshop by Japanese Artist Rihaku Inoue
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to introduce Rihaku Inoue from Japan to San Francisco for her first live calligraphy demonstration. Join us for an evening of visual stimulation as she preforms her calligraphy through movement and additions of color on a wall-size paper. It will be a stimulating performance art for all ages. There will also be workshop for attendees to create their own calligraphic art\, with teachings from Rihaku. \n\n It will be an evening full of creativity and color!\nDinner\, drinks and workshop materials also included. \n  \nRihaku Inoue\nJapanese Calligraphy Artist\nRihaku is a well known calligraphy artist based in Japan.  She actively promotes her work through solo exhibitions\, workshops and demonstrations overseas.  Her style is considered a new type of Japanese calligraphy that incorporates color with acrylic paints\, in addition to the traditional black ink.  Japanese calligraphy is commonly understood to be simply “writing”\, but by using more three-dimensional\, active expressions\, she believes it can be an art form.   Even if the audience has no knowledge of Japanese characters\, she wants this contemporary calligraphy style to stimulate viewers’ senses and be valued as contemporary visual art across all borders. She has provided calligraphic graphic designs to corporations and  has also designed wall artwork for public spaces. DESCRIPTION:New Restrictions in US Foreign Investment in Critical Technologies\nMonday\, November 19 | 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM\nMorgan Lewis | One Market Plaza\, Spear Tower\, 28th Floor\, San FranciscoVENUE:  \nOn August 13\, 2018\, the president signed the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA) into law\, which is expected to significantly impact national security reviews of foreign investment into the United States\, particularly for certain US businesses involved in “critical technologies.” The law will affect a broad range of Bay Area companies\, particularly high-tech companies\, companies working on technology with defense and security applications\, VC firms (especially those with foreign LPs)\, private equity funds (also with foreign partners)\, and real estate firms. \nPlease join us as our panelists (including a former government official who led national security reviews of foreign investment and former military personnel with insight into the changing framework of national security) share their insights about how FIRRMA is changing the landscape for foreign investment in the Bay Area. \nWe will discuss the expansion of coverage of transactions subject to review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS)\, the mandatory declaration process\, changes in procedures for notification and submissions\, strengthened sanctions for violations of those procedures\, and enhanced criteria to be applied by CFIUS to review proposed transactions\, particularly investments from China and Russia. DESCRIPTION:2019 is already shaping up to be a volatile year for the United States\, Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region.  Economic growth concerns are elevated on both sides of the Pacific\, trade tensions are growing\, security threats\, particularly the unresolved issue of North Korea’s nuclear program\, persist\, and Japan is expanding its economic and geopolitical role in Asia while US leadership is increasingly called into question. \nWhat happens in Japan over the coming year will have an economic and strategic impact for the United States and the region as a whole. Whether you do business in Japan\, have a personal interest in the country\, or are just a concerned citizen\, please join us on February 12\, 4:30-6:00 in San Francisco at the Public Policy Institute of California’s Bechtel Conference Center to hear three Japan experts give their views on the political\, economic and security outlook for Japan and prospects for the US-Japan relationship in 2019. \nRobert Madsen\, is an economist and global strategy consultant\, who has many decades of experience working on Japan\, China and the broader Asian region.  Sean Creehan is a financial economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco\, who\, among his many responsibilities\, is the Fed’s chief Japan watcher here in the Bay Area and has been covering the broader Asian region for two decades.  Larry Greenwood is a former diplomat who has worked on trade and finance issues and Asian regional institutions over the past 40 years. \nPlease come to take advantage of this unusual opportunity to hear from three of the Bay Area’s top Japan experts give their views on what to expect in 2019. \n\nSpeaker Profiles: \nRobert Madsen\nGlobal Economics\, Finance\, Politics and Geopolitics \nRobert Madsen is an expert on global economics and politics who advises financial institutions\, corporations\, governments\, and monetary authorities on long-run trends as well as emergencies around the world. From 2004 to 2015 he was a Senior Fellow at MIT’s Center for International Studies. Over that decade\, he served with several of Japan’s most prestigious businessmen on the Executive Council at Unison Capital\, a premier private equity group; and as a consultant to one of the “super-major” oil companies\, which he helped with global and regional forecasting as well as the 2008-2009 financial crisis\, fiscal and monetary policies in the major economies\, Chinese politics and economics\, European debt and banking\, and the future of the Eurozone. He has additionally worked as Senior Economist and Advisor at Asia Alternatives; and a retained consultant to Caxton Corporation\, a macroeconomic hedge fund. \nFrom 1997 to 2013\, Dr. Madsen wrote the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Japan Country Reports and contributed to that company’s analysis of China\, broader East Asia\, and the world. He also did substantial modeling of national debt sustainability\, the future of Chinese GDP growth\, and other topics amenable to quantitative analysis. Before joining MIT in 2004\, he was a Fellow at Stanford University’s Asia Pacific Research Center\, Asia Strategist at Soros Private Funds Management\, and a limited partner and advisor to the Robert M. Bass Group on its investments in Japan. Still earlier\, as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company he focused on international finance\, the EP&C industry\, and Overseas Chinese business networks in Southeast Asia. \nRobert Madsen graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University’s Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and then entered Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar\, where he earned a master’s degree\, with distinction\, and a doctorate in international relations. He also holds a J.D.\, with distinction\, from Stanford Law School and is a member of the California State Bar. Having spent over a dozen years abroad\, he is fluent in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. \n  \n \nSean Creehan\nAnalyst – Northeast Asia\, South Asia \nSean Creehan is an analyst in the Country Analysis Unit within the Division of Financial Institution Supervision and Credit (FISC) at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. In that capacity\, he conducts research into Asian financial and economic issues and produces analyses of Asian foreign banking organizations. In addition\, he monitors financial\, regulatory\, and economic developments in Asia with a special focus on Northeast Asia and South Asia. His research interests include financial inclusion\, cross-border capital flows\, and financial technology. \nBefore joining the Federal Reserve\, Mr. Creehan worked as a management and strategy consultant advising clients on their investing and operating activities in Asia. His work has been published in academic and popular publications\, including the Harvard International Review\, the SAIS Review of International Affairs\, and The Atlantic. \nMr. Creehan received a master’s degree in international economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Harvard University. He spent a postgraduate year as a Harvard-Yenching Scholar at Peking University and speaks Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian. In addition\, he is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. \n  \nLarry Greenwood\nPresident\, Japan Society of Northern California \nLarry Greenwood assumed the position of President of the Japan Society of Northern California on March 16\, 2016. Prior to joining the Society\, Larry worked four years in Tokyo where he managed government relations throughout Asia for MetLife and five years in Manila\, Philippines where he co-led the Asian Development Bank and was responsible for about $7 billion of development lending a year. As a career diplomat from 1976-2006\, Larry enjoyed two assignments in the US Embassy in Tokyo\, postings in the Philippines and Singapore\, and a variety of other jobs\, including a term as US Ambassador to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group. Larry is concurrently Senior Advisor to the Bower Group Asia\, a DC-based consulting firm advising corporations on government policy and regulations\, and a non-resident Senior Adviser to the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, one of the most prominent think tanks on international issues in Washington DC. Larry holds a BA from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg\, Florida and an MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford Massachusetts. Come learn about this Chicago-born businessman\, Olympic Committee Chairman\, and renown art collector\, who left a remarkable legacy in the worlds of both the arts and sports. \n\nSpeaker Profile: \n \nDr. Robert Mintz\nDeputy Director – Art & Programs\, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco \nAs Deputy Director\, Dr. Mintz guides the Asian Art Museum’s exhibitions and collections efforts. Over the decade he spent with Walters\, Rob developed exhibitions of Japanese decorative arts (Japanese Cloisonne Enamels\, 2010\,and Designed for Flowers: Japanese Contemporary Ceramics\, 2103)\, Japanese paintings (Autumn Colors\, 2012)\, Contemporary South and Southeast Asian works (Amita Bhatt\, 2011\, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, 2013)\, and other topical exhibitions that brought Asian works of art to the Baltimore community. \nBorn and raised in Midland\, Michigan\, Rob’s interest in Asian art and culture\, and in particular Japanese art\, began during his undergraduate studies when his family relocated to Tokyo. His undergraduate studies first at Reed College and later at the University of Michigan (BA\, Art History\, 1989) gradually turned to an intensive study of Japanese language\, culture\, and art. His doctoral work was an exploration of 18th-century Japanese painter and poet Yosa Buson’s literati-style works completed in 2002 at the University of Washington. He has taught the history of Asian and of Japanese art for several universities first near Seattle (Central Washington University\, Seattle University\, the University of Washington) and later in Maryland (Towson University\, The Johns Hopkins University). We apologize for the inconvenience.** \n \nCareer women often attribute their ability to succeed in a challenging environment to mentors and/or role models. In the Japan Society Women’s Impact Network member survey\, only 3% of women who responded indicated that they have had a female mentor while working in Japan and 5% indicated they have had a male mentor in Japan. In contrast\, 30% indicated they have had a female mentor in the U.S. and about 28% of respondents have had a male mentor.  In addition with only one exception\, our respondents unanimously indicated that they did not think there are sufficient female role models in Japan today. \nPlease come join a lively discussion on how role models and mentors shape lives\, what makes a good mentor\, how to find one and how to be one! SUMMARY:PANEL DISCUSSION: Shining a Light on Japan's Corporate Governance Issues – Ghosn/Nissan

CASH (NO CHANGE GIVEN) AND MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED.** \n \nCorporate Governance in Japan has been a hot topic over the past several years as it was a key pillar of Abe’s Third Arrow. Japan’s Corporate Governance Code was implemented in 2015 with the hopes of providing for better functioning boards through greater independence and diversity\, encouraging effective engagement with investors\, and encouraging efficient capital allocation (among other objectives).  \nThe November arrest of former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn has sparked additional discussion on corporate governance issues facing Japan including (i) CEO accountability;  (ii) the necessity of independence (even more critical when there is a powerful CEO);  (iii) separating roles of CEO and Chairman; (iv) the role of compensation and nomination committees/value of separate committees; and (v) as well as executive compensation issues.  \nWe will use the Ghosn “scandal” as a jumping off point to discuss these issues. Has it encouraged companies to take actions to improve these and other corporate governance issues or will this be passed off as a one-off situation?  What does this mean for investors in Japan as well as Japan’s ability and desire to attract top international talent? \nPlease come hear our distinguished panelists\, featuring Christina Ahmadjian of Hitotsubashi University\, Jun Frank of ICS Advisory\, and Howard Smith of Indus Capital Partners\, to speak about these issues. Her publications have appeared in journals including American Sociological Review\, Administrative Science Quarterly\, Organization Science\, and California Management Review. She teaches courses including Organizational Behavior\, Corporate Governance\, Business Research\, Leadership\, and Global Management. She received an A.B.\, magna cum laude\, from Harvard University\, an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business\, and a PhD at the Haas School at the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to her position at Hitotsubashi\, she was an assistant professor at Columbia Business School. Her business experience includes positions at Bain & Company as well as Mitsubishi Electric. She served as a non-executive director at Eisai Co.\, Ltd. from 2009 to 2013 and currently serves as a non-executive director at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries\, Japan Exchange Group\, and Sumitomo Electric Industries. She is an American citizen and has lived in Japan for 23 years. \n  \n \nJun Frank\nExecutive Director\, ICS Advisory\, North America and Asia \nJun Frank is an Executive Director in the ICS group of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). He advises clients based on the West Coast and Asia on corporate governance\, executive compensation\, shareholder engagement\, and environmental and social matters. Jun brings with him unique experience\, having served in research leadership roles at two of the world’s largest proxy advisers\, ISS and Glass Lewis. Prior to joining ICS in 2015\, Jun was a member of ISS’ Global Policy Board and headed its Asia ex-Japan research\, overseeing the proxy advisory service and policy developments for the region. Prior to ISS\, he served as Director of Asian Proxy Research at Glass Lewis where he managed corporate governance research on Asian companies beginning in 2005. \n  \nHoward Smith\nPartner\, Indus Capital Partners LLC \nHoward Smith is a partner of Indus Capital Partners LLC. He is the sole fund manager of the Indus Japan Long Only Fund and the co-manager of the Indus Japan (long/short) fund with AUM of ~$2.0bn. Howard has been heavily involved in recent efforts to improve corporate governance and capital efficiency among portfolio companies\, submitting proposals to companies including Olympus\, Sony\, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan\, Showa Denko\, Taiheiyo Cement\, Haseko and Ebara.  He has presented at numerous forums\, including the Keizai Doyukai and working groups at the Japanese FSA. Howard recently relocated San Francisco after spending over 25 of the past 30 years in Japan. He graduated from the University of York in the UK in 1988 with a BA in Economics/Statistics and obtained an MSc in Economics from Birkbeck\, University of London\, in 1996. In that capacity\, he conducts research into Asian financial and economic issues and produces analyses of Asian foreign banking organizations. In addition\, he monitors financial\, regulatory\, and economic developments in Asia with a special focus on Northeast Asia and South Asia. His research interests include financial inclusion\, cross-border capital flows\, and financial technology. Before joining the Federal Reserve\, Mr. Creehan worked as a management and strategy consultant advising clients on their investing and operating activities in Asia. His work has been published in academic and popular publications\, including the Harvard International Review\, the SAIS Review of International Affairs\, and The Atlantic. Mr. Creehan received a master’s degree in international economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Harvard University. He spent a postgraduate year as a Harvard-Yenching Scholar at Peking University and speaks Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian. Prior to joining the Society\, Larry worked four years in Tokyo where he managed government relations throughout Asia for MetLife and five years in Manila\, Philippines where he co-led the Asian Development Bank and was responsible for about $7 billion of development lending a year. As a career diplomat from 1976-2006\, Larry enjoyed two assignments in the US Embassy in Tokyo\, postings in the Philippines and Singapore\, and a variety of other jobs\, including a term as US Ambassador to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group. Space is Limited.\nPlease come to the Kinokuniya book store in Japan Town on April 25 at 6:00PM to hear author and former US trade official Joanna Reed Shelton talk about her book\, A Christian in the Land of the Gods\, the remarkable story of her great-grandfather who was a Christian missionary in Meiji Japan.  In November 1877\, three months after Emperor Meiji’s conscript army of commoners defeated forces led by Japan’s famous “last samurai\,” the Reverend Tom Alexander and his new wife\, Emma\, arrived in Japan\, a country where practicing Christianity had been punishable by death until 1868. Joanna’s book offers an intimate view of the hardships and challenges faced by nineteenth-century missionaries working to plant their faith in a country just emerging from two and a half centuries of self-imposed seclusion. The narrative takes place against the backdrop of wrenching change in Japan and the jockeying for territory and influence by foreign powers in East Asia\, as seen through the eyes of a Presbyterian missionary from East Tennessee. \nPlease come to this FREE program.  Copies of the A Christian in the Land of the Gods\, as well as the Japanese-language version\, Watashi-no Kazoku-no Meiji Nihon (My Family in Meiji Japan) will be available for sale. Since moving to Montana in 1999\, she has taught undergraduates and adults at the University of Montana\, served as Senior Fellow and Interim Director of UM’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center\, and lectured to numerous public and private audiences. She writes a monthly column for the Missoulian newspaper\, has written for the New York Times\, and has appeared on radio and television in the United States and abroad. She participates in local and international conferences and consults with private investors and other groups. \nPrior to moving to Montana\, Ms. Shelton served as Deputy Secretary General of the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)\, the second-ranking official of a (then) $200 million international organization with 1700 employees\, where she bore major management and substantive responsibilities.  Ms. Shelton previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Trade Policy and Programs at the US Department of State; senior staff member and economist with the US House of Representatives’ Ways and Means Committee; and economist with the US Treasury Department. She also worked for the US Trade Representative’s Office and in the Japanese operations of a major US multinational company. She has advised Cabinet and subcabinet officials\, Members of Congress\, and participated in numerous bilateral and multilateral trade and investment negotiations.  Ms. Shelton has a BA from Duke University and an MA from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and speaks French\, Danish\, and some Japanese.
