SUMMARY:ANPO: The Arts of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:A film screening and conversation with director Linda Hoaglund\n“ANPO” is a Japanese term referring to the U.S.-Japan Mutual Security Treaty\, which allows for stationing American troops and bases in Okinawa and elsewhere in Japan. In 1960\, public resentment and concerns about this military presence boiled over into massive popular demonstrations. Japanese artists attempted to both chronicle and contribute to this resistance movement with a rich range of works\, including many large-scale paintings that remain little known outside of Japan. Contemporary artists continue to engage the problems generated by the bases.\nLinda Hoaglund’s ANPO: Art X War vividly captures this story of cultural politics. Art in America praises the film as lavishly shot and providing “the first comprehensive treatment in any format” of Japanese artistic responses to security concerns. Pulitzer Prize winning historian John Dower describes ANPO as “an important film that opens windows to a Japan most people have never seen and to the complexity of U.S.-Japan relations.”\n Linda Hoaglund is a filmmaker and translator. She produced the acclaimed documentary Wings of Defeat (2007)\, about Japanese kamikaze pilots\, and has written subtitles for over 200 films\, including those by Akira Kurosawa and Hayao Miyazaki.\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC; RSVP recommended. Please call (415) 422-6828.\nLocation:\nFromm Hall\, USF Main Campus\, 2130 Fulton Street\nEnter from Parker Ave. near Golden Gate Ave. <MAP>\nDate & Time:\nWednesday\, October 19th\, 2011\, 5:30 to 7:30 pm\nPresented by the Japan Policy Research Institute (JPRI) at the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim.\nCo-sponsored by the Japan Society of Northern California\, the Asia Society of Northern California and the Dilena Takeyama Center for the Study of Japan and Japanese Culture at San Francisco State University.

SUMMARY:Japanese Language and Cultural Experience: Sumi-e 墨絵 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sumi-e (墨絵)\, also called suiboku-ga (水墨画)\, is Japanese ink wash painting. Brought to Japan from China by Zen Buddhist monks in the mid-14th century\, sumi-e is a very elegant and expressive technique that utilizes variations in brushwork and contrasting shades of ink to create dramatic images. The philosophy of sumi-e is to capture the subject’s ki (life spirit). \nJoin us for a hands-on workshop to experience the basic elements of 墨絵 in a friendly atmosphere. Ms. Fumiyo Yoshikawa\, a local nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist\, will explain the essential techniques and tools of this ancient art form and introduce relevant Japanese vocabulary during the course of the evening. This is a great opportunity to learn Japanese expressions and culture in a fun setting. \nTo begin\, Ms. Yoshikawa will provide a brief history and cultural background of sumi-e in English. As she explains the fundamentals\, participants will practice Japanese terminology specific to the art of sumi-e. After her demonstration\, participants will try the basic movements with brush and ink. You will have time during the workshop to complete your own painting on a square paperboard to enjoy at home.\nThis event has limited space and registration is first come first served. Please register early to ensure your spot in the workshop. No previous experience in sumi-e or Japanese language is necessary.\nLocation:\nJapan Society of Northern California\n500 Washington St.\, Ste.300\nSan Francisco\, CA 94111 \nDate & Time: \nFriday\, October 28\, 2011\nCheck in: 6:15pm\nProgram: 6:30 – 8:30pm\nSpecial instructions:\nAdvance registration is REQUIRED as seating is limited to 15. The deadline to RSVP for this event is Friday\, October 21\, 2011. Refunds will not be made after this date.\nFumiyo Yoshikawa is from Kyoto\, Japan\, and came to the US in 2003. Her technique is nihonga\, a particular painting style using traditional Japanese materials and methods. In addition to bamboo brushes and sumi-ink\, she uses dry pigments made of natural materials including minerals\, clays\, etc. She studied this method at Kyoto University of Education. Ms. Yoshikawa has exhibited her work at many museums including Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and major galleries in Tokyo\, Kyoto and other cities. In addition\, she has taught art\, brush painting and other nihonga techniques at several art institutions and colleges in Japan and other countries.
