SUMMARY:Coffee Life in Japan
DESCRIPTION:In Japan\, coffee gained popularity in the 20th century along with the increased fascination towards the West at the time. Many kissaten\, or Japanese-style tea rooms that also serve coffee\, opened during this period. Kissaten owners emphasized detail and accuracy in their brewing methods while creating a unique atmosphere to enjoy the coffee in. \nThird-wave coffee culture focuses on delivering high-quality specialty coffee and is heavily influenced by innovative methods the kissaten owners used to improve the experience of drinking coffee. In the last few years\, there has been a similar pattern in the import of third-wave coffee culture and foreign specialty cafes like Blue Bottle Coffee to Japan. The phenomenon represents a mutual influence between the U.S. and Japan as it transitioned from the second to third-wave coffee culture. \nJoin us for this special program to take a look at these reinventions that stem from the delicacy and precision held in Japanese culture. \n  \nDate and Time:\nThursday\, October 28th\, 2021 at 3:00 P.M. (PDT)\nFriday\, October 29th\, 2021 at 7:00 A.M. From her first trip to Japan in 1963 to the present\, her sojourns in Japan have been flavored by coffee. Her work on Japanese education\, family and social change\, adolescence and Japanese food culture was honored by the Japan Society of Boston’s John E. Thayer III Award and by the conferral of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Government of Japan. Her book on coffee\, Coffee Life in Japan\, received several awards. SUMMARY:Practice your Japanese & Become a Networking Pro!
DESCRIPTION:*Japanese & English Program with Networking \nAre you looking for a chance to practice your Japanese language skills with native Japanese speakers? We are inviting all Japanese language learners to an exciting language exchange with native Japanese speakers! The event will provide a mutual benefit for both sides\, as we will be practicing how to network with conversations in both languages. This is a perfect opportunity to talk and mingle with each other in a networking environment. \nWe all know that networking and connecting with others is important in the U.S.\, and especially in Silicon Valley. Often it boils down to who you know in job searches\, when founding new businesses\, marketing your company’s products\, and more. But how do we create those networks? For this event\, Japanese speakers will learn how to network and practice their Japanese language skills in an unscripted\, realistic setting. \nOur amazing teacher\, Rochelle Kopp\, is a management consultant who specializes in cross-cultural communication\, personnel management\, leadership\, and vitalizing organizations. She will be sharing an in-depth look on how to network in Silicon Valley with native English speakers. \nIn the second half of the program\, we will use Zoom breakout rooms to network and apply what was learned in the first half while engaging in a language exchange. We invite native English speakers to use their Japanese language skills to network with Japanese speakers! Since networking is a key aspect of this program\, all registrants will be asked to please participate. \nSeats are limited\, so please register early! We look forward to seeing you at the program. \n  \nDate and Time:\nSaturday\, October 30th\, 2021 at 10-11 A.M. (Japan Time)\nFriday\, October 29th\, 2021 at 6-7 P.M. SUMMARY:Confident Conversing for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:にほんごChit Chat \nYou’ve got the textbooks and flashcards. You know hiragana and katakana by heart. You practice kanji religiously. But how comfortable are you with speaking Japanese?\nLanguage is a way to communicate with others. Very often\, however\, beginners are so worried about mistakes and embarrassment that they forgo actually using their newly acquired language skills. This would hinder progress at any level\, so let’s talk! We are now accepting students for a 12-week workshop on beginner conversations. Under the steady guidance of Sakamoto-sensei\, 6 students will have the opportunity to flex their Japanese capabilities over Zoom for 1.5 hours at a time. In this intimate group setting\, Sakamoto-sensei will be able to gauge the needs of each student and adjust subject matter to these needs. This is a great way to grow comfortable using Japanese in unscripted and genuine conversations\, and make new friends!\n*This workshop is meant for those who already have a foundation in Japanese\, preferably having participated in JSNC’s Beginning 1-4. *Weekly topics will fluctuate based on students’ knowledge and needs*Workshops with low enrollment may be canceledDate: Starting on January 11 at 18:30-20:00 (Pacific Time) Tuesdays 12 sessions!Fee: $275  (Membership is required for this booking. Join and support the Japan Society! SUMMARY:Be the Bridge: The Untold Stories of San Jose Japantown “Why is Japantown Important?"
DESCRIPTION:“Why is Japantown Important?” \nJoin us for a special talk featuring the Japanese American Museum of San Jose and learn about the history of Japanese immigrants in Northern California. Michael Sera\, Board President at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj.org)\, will tell the overall history of Japanese immigrants to the Bay Area and Northern California in addition to the Japanese American community in the Bay Area today. He will also share why it is important to maintain and preserve this local community. This is a great opportunity to gain knowledge about the history of Japanese Americans and the lesser-known stories of San Jose Japantown. \n__ \nDate and Time:\nWednesday\, February 2nd\, 2022 at 4:30-5:30 P.M. Michael joined the board in 2011\, then managed public programs before becoming Board President in 2017.  His attraction to JAMsj was the opportunity to give back to the local community after having spent his college days trying to dance at the Obon festivals.  Like most students\, he never learned much about the Japanese American experience.  “I’ve learned more from the internees who visit the museum than I will ever read about” says Michael.  Michael also serves on the boards of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern CA\, the Japanese Community Congress of San Jose and not on the San Jose Obon Dance committee.  Michael is also an avid swimmer and an unintentional user of chlorine cologne\, just ask his wife. \n\n__ \n__ \n__ \n\n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \n__ \nModerator\, Suzanne Basalla | President and CEO of the U.S.-Japan Council & member of the Board of the Japan Society of Northern California \nSuzanne Basalla is the President and CEO of the U.S.-Japan Council\, and is the member of the Board of the Japan Society of Northern California. Ms. Basalla was recently awarded the 2021 Nakasone Yasuhiro Award of Excellence. She joins USJC from her role as Chief of Staff at the Toyota Research Institute (TRI)\, a Silicon Valley-headquartered subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation and has been there since 2017. \nPrior to TRI\, Ms. Basalla had served from 2012 – 2017 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at USJC. She helped lead USJC through people-to-people connections\, with a focus on investing in next-generation leaders through the private-public TOMODACHI Initiative\, which was established in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake. \nMs. Basalla’s 20-year government career included service in the U.S. Navy\, the Department of Defense\, and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. \n  \n__ \n__

DESCRIPTION:*Hybrid Event \nThe US and Japan have been collaborating for many years to shape the rules of the road for digital business and to promote the development and application of advanced technologies to improve our respective competitiveness and maintain our collective technological superiority.  Former Prime Minister Suga and President Biden launched in March 2021 the Competitiveness and Resiliency (CoRe) Partnership where they pledged to advance secure and open 5G networks\, including through Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN)\, invest significantly in 5G and next generation mobile networks\, work with third countries to promote a dynamic open digital economy\, make supply chains\, including those for semiconductors\, more resilient\, focus on genome sequencing\, and undertake joint research on quantum computing.  The issues outlined there will likely picked up by the new Economic Policy Consultative Committee (formally known as the EPCC or also known as the “Econ 2+2”) announced by President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida on January 21st. \nPlease join us to hear from our expert speakers from government and the private sector talk about what US-Japan cooperation on advanced technologies means for our two nations\, for our competitive challenge with China and for tech businesses here in Silicon Valley.  Matthew Goodman is Senior Vice President for Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies where he brings his more than three decades of experience\, both in and out of government\, including six years as Finance Attache at the US Embassy in Tokyo\, to bear to explore international economic policy issues and global economic governance.  Kazumi Nishikawa is Director of the IT Industry Division at Japan’s Ministry of the Economy Trade and Industry and in charge of policies to promote Japan’s technology and IT companies.  Also from the Big Tech company\, Kenichiro Mizoguchi is the General Manager\, Hitachi\, Ltd and in charge of government relationship will speak from the perspective of a large tech corporation. \n_ \nDate and Time:\nWednesday\, March 2nd\, 2022 at 4:00-5:30 P.M. SUMMARY:Hidden Innovation - How Japanese Companies Can Innovate And Expand into new markets with their Internal technology
DESCRIPTION:Innovation Salon Event \nMany Japanese companies come to Silicon Valley with the hope that they will identify great new technologies that can drive innovation in their organizations. This can be a difficult and highly competitive path. Innovation expert Robert Pearlstein believes that these companies often ignore an equally lucrative and often easier path to innovation – one that derives from effectively mining and refocusing their own\, internally developed intellectual property. \nIn this program\, Pearlstein will share his insights about how Japanese companies can identify lucrative new opportunities to commercialize existing technology and drive disruptive innovation – without having to compete directly with Silicon Valley VCs for the latest venture deals. Pearlstein will use real-life examples from his work\, including stories about the SIRI and wall climbing robots\, to show how companies can find new opportunities for innovation around existing technology by following a 4-step process: \n\nIdentify critical market needs that can be addressed by internally developed technology\nDetermine a compelling approach to the customer\nClearly demonstrate the benefits of the product relative to costs\,\nShow how the product is better than the competition\n\nThe presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&A. \n_ \nDate and Time:\n \nU.S.: Monday\, May 9\, 2022 @ 4:00 – 5:10 PM (Pacific Time)\nJapan: Tuesday\, May 10\, 2022 @ 8:00 – 9:10 AM  (Japan Time) \n__ \nPrice:\nFREE!\n \n___ \nAgenda (Pacific Time): \n4:00-4:05 PM         Opening Remarks\, Steve Pollock | Founder & CEO\, Turnstone Ventures\n4:05-4:25 PM          Robert Pearlstein | President & CEO\, Qanopy\n4:25-4:45 PM          Panel Discussion\n4:45-5:05 PM          Q&A Session\n5:05-5:10 PM          Closing Remarks\, Takahide Akiyama | President\, Japan Society of Northern California \n___ \n\nOUR AMAZING SPEAKERS\nRobert Pearlstein | President & CEO\, Qanopy_ \nRobert Pearlstein is the President and CEO of Qanopy.
