SUMMARY:WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Tennis Classic Kids Day Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The Japan Society of Northern California is pleased to announce a volunteer opportunity to help the USTA in hosting the annual Kids Day at the opening of the WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Tennis Classic (fka the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford)\, part of the women’s US Open Series\, with tennis stars from around the globe. \nKids Day is a longstanding USTA Norcal tradition of engaging kids in sports\, a critical formula to promoting success through fitness and education for kids in the community. The Kids Day activities include interviews with WTA players\, Q&A\, and lunch and tickets for the kids to watch some competitive matches\, for many the first time seeing a tennis match! This year\, less than 360 days away\, the Summer Olympics comes to Tokyo after 56 years\, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the community and share not only the vision\, spirit and values of the Olympics with the kids\, but also the opportunity to talk about Japan\, the host country. \nAfter having successfully gathered volunteers for the 2019 Prefontaine Diamond Classic\, the premier Track and Field meet at Stanford University on June 30 and our first activity to celebrate the 2020 Games\, the Japan Society has again offered to invite volunteers to support USTA Norcal’s Kids Day. \nPlease come and immerse yourself in the world of tennis while enjoying a fun day with the kids in the midst of some high-level competition! \n  \n \n\nClick here for the Background Consent Form. It must be filled out and sent to duenas-bielser@norcal.usta.com after registration.\n  \nPlease note the following:\n1. You must be at least 16 years old to be a volunteer. \nAdditional Information:\n1. A Background Form must be filled out and sent to Silvia Duenas-Bielser @ duenas-bielser@norcal.usta.com.\n2. Here’s a map of the layout from last year. Kids Day will be on the baseball field (#2).  There’s a short walkway from the KD site to the stadium where matches are being played. As you can see\, the site is pretty compact. \n \n  \n*Safe Sport \nConsistent abuse-prevention training across the Olympic Movement’s 50 national governing bodies is critical for keeping athletes safe and ensuring that adults who work with youth clearly understand their roles and responsibilities\,” said Shellie Pfohl\, CEO of the U.S. Center for SafeSport. “The Center appreciates USTA’s commitment\, leadership and support of putting an athlete’s well-being first and creating respectful sport environments across the country.” \n  \n \nThe Japan Society of Northern California created the Road to Tokyo 2020 Initiative to help raise awareness of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in the Bay Area through sports and strengthen the bridge between the Bay Area and Japan. It is driven by volunteers who have a passion and interests in Japan\, sports\, and culture and are dedicated to creating even stronger ties of friendship between the Bay Area and Japan. \nThe Road to Tokyo 2020 Initiative focuses on developing a series of programs\, sporting activities\, and community engagement until next summer to generate the excitement and spirit towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Additionally\, they create the opportunity to visit and enjoy the beauties\, cuisines\, history\, and culture of Japan. The programs will continue to strengthen the already firm foundation of US-Japan friendship that has been built over the past 70 years of close engagement and fellowship.

SUMMARY:Implications for Corporate Governance in Japan in the Aftermath of the Ghosn Case
DESCRIPTION:The arrest and extended detention of business legend Carlos Ghosn has rocked the global business world\, sparking debate about the state of Japanese corporate governance\, Japan’s criminal justice system\, Nissan’s internal controls and\, of course\, Carlos Ghosn himself. \nHow is the Ghosn affair being viewed in Japan and abroad? Will the case affect how foreign companies perceive the investment climate in Japan? Will the case lead to changes in Japanese corporate governance or justice system? \nJoin us for an in-depth discussion of the Ghosn case and its implications by two experts who have been following the matter closely. One of the experts is Glen S. Fukushima\, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington DC\, who splits his time between DC\, Tokyo\, and San Francisco. Resley\, Partner\, Morgan\, Lewisが日産・ゴーン事件とコーポレイトガバナンスについて解説します。 \n豪華ランチ付き。ランチタイムを利用して、ぜひご参加ください。お待ちしております！ \n \n  \n\n  \nGlen S. Fukushima\, Senior Fellow\, Center for American Progress \nGlen S. SUMMARY:Julia Flynn Siler’s "The White Devil’s Daughter: The Women Who Fought Slavery in San Francisco’s Chinatown"
DESCRIPTION:In this era of #MeToo\, anti-immigrant discrimination\, and the ongoing scourge of human trafficking\, a timely new book examines our city’s own history of sex trafficking of Asian girls through the inspirational story of two women immigrants\, a Scot and a Chinese\, who joined forces to face these challenges. Please come hear San Franciscan journalist and writer Julia Flynn Siler tell this fascinating story in her new book\, The White Devil’s Daughters\,an unsparing look at the trafficking of young women from China\, Japan and Korea through the brothels of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 19th and early 20th century and the extraordinary efforts led largely by women to fight to end sexual slavery in our city. Julia also brings to light the remarkable and little-known story of Yamada Waka\, a young Japanese girl kidnapped and forced into prostitution\, who escaped the brothels\, returned to Japan and became one of Japan’s top feminists and activists in the pre-war period. \nDon’t miss this look at San Francisco’s history which remains very relevant today. \nDate: Wednesday\, October\, 30\, 2019 \nSchedule\nProgram Agenda\n5:30-6:00      Registration and Networking\n6:00-6:05      Welcome (Larry Greenwood\, President of Japan Society )\n6:05-6:10      TOTO welcome\n6:10-6:40      Julia Julia Flynn Siler Presentation (Larry introduces)\n6:40-6:50      Q&A to Julia\n6:50-7:05      Emily Murase presents on anti-trafficking\n7:05-7:10      Q&A for Emily\n7:10-7:45      Networking & Dinner \n*Gourmet Japanese meal is included! \nLocation\nTOTO Concept 190\n190 King Street\nSan Francisco\, CA 94107 United States \n  \n \nSpeakers:\nJulia Flynn Stiler\n \n  \n  \nJulia Flynn Siler is a New York Times best-selling author and journalist. SUMMARY:The 1964 Tokyo Olympics: Japan's Re-Emergence and the Olympians
DESCRIPTION:As Japan prepares for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games\, it is important to look back at the extraordinary story of the last time Japan hosted the Summer Games in 1964. Those Games were historic\, marking the first time a non-Western country hosted the Olympics and symbolizing Japan remarkable rebirth after the war’s destruction and humiliation of defeat into a peaceful\, economically prosperous\, democratic nation. \nPlease join us for a unique look at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics featuring Roy Tomizawa\, author of a newly published book\, 1964: The Greatest Year in the History of Japan\, which expertly interweaves the geopolitical ferment of that era with the individual stories of the athletes from around the world who participated in and whose lives were shaped by the Games. Roy\, who is visiting the Bay Area from Japan\, will be joined by two Northern Californian Olympians who participated in the 1964 Games: Billy Mills\, the underdog gold medal runner who went on to become a well-known activist for Native Americans\, and Andy Toro\, the Hungarian canoeist who made headlines when he defected to the West during the Games. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn more about an historic event and hear amusing and moving anecdotes from those who lived the experience which changed their lives. Whether you go to Tokyo to experience the 2020 Games in person or watch them at home\, this program will enrich your understanding and appreciation for the Games and Japan’s role in the world. \nRoy’s book can be purchased at the event or here. 1964 – The Greatest Year in the History of Japan を執筆した Roy Tomizawa 氏が戦後日本が経済復興の奇跡に乗り出し成功を収めた経緯を1964年のオリンピックと絡めて解説します。 \nDate: Wednesday\, November 6\, 2019 \nProgram:\n5:30 – 6:00 pm         Registration\n6:00 – 6:05 pm         Welcome and Introduction (Larry)\n6:05 – 6:35 pm          Presentation by Roy Tomizawa\n6:35 – 7:05 pm          Moderated discussion with Roy\, Billy Mills and Andy Toro\n7:05 – 7:25 pm          Q&A with Roy\, Billy\, Andy\, Ed Burke and Anne Cribbs\n7:25 – 8:00 pm          Networking Reception \nLocation:\nPricewaterhouseCoopers LLP\nThree Embarcadero Center\nSan Francisco\, California \n \nSpeakers\nRoy Tomizawa \nRoy Tomizawa celebrated his first birthday on the opening day of the 1964 Olympics. His father worked with the NBC News crew that broadcast those games to homes in the United States. As far back as he can remember\, Roy has been a fan of the Olympics. A year after Tokyo was awarded the 2020 Olympics\, Roy went searching for an English-language book that chronicled the 1964 Olympic\, but couldn’t find one. A former print journalist\, he decided to write that book. After 4 years of research and interviews of over 75 Olympians from the ’64 Games\, he published the book\, “1964: The Greatest Year in the History of Japan – How the Tokyo Olympics Symbolized Japan’s Miraculous Rise from the Ashes.” Roy is a leadership and talent development consultant from New York with over 30-years’ experience in Asia\, working for such companies as MetLife\, Nikko Asset Management\, Microsoft\, DBS Bank\, Morgan Stanley and Mercer Human Resource Consulting. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBilly Mills\n \nBilly Mills shocked the world and came from behind to win the 10\,000-meter track finals at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the time\, he set a world record of 28 minutes\, 24.4 seconds and is still the only American to ever win a gold medal in the 10k event. Mills\, an Oglala Lakota (Sioux)\, is a native of Pine Ridge\, South Dakota\, and went on run at the University of Kansas. His story was the inspiration for the movie Running Brave\, which starred Robbie Benson and chronicles his life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the many obstacles he overcame to become an Olympic Champion. In Lakota culture\, someone who achieves great success has a ‘giveaway’ to thank the support system of family and friends who helped him achieve his goal. As part of his effort to give back to his community\, Billy helped found Running Strong for American Indian Youth and became the organization’s National Spokesperson. Today Billy travels over 300 days every year. He visits American Indian communities throughout the U.S. and speaks to youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage. \n  \n  \nAndras Toro \nAndras (Andy) Toro is a 4-time Olympian in canoeing\, winning a bronze medal in the Canadian Double (C2) 1\,000 meter event at the 1960 Rome Olympics\, representing Hungary for two Olympics\, and America for two. He was appointed coach for the US Canoeing Olympic Team in preparation of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. As an administrator Toro was an elected member of the US Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors from 1978 to 1984. He helped establish the “Athletes Board for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992\, and served on the USOC’s executive committee from 1984 to 1988 among many other roles. Toro made the headlines in 1964 when he defected from his home country of Hungary to the United States\, in the midst of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He has written about this time in his soon-to-be-published book\, “My Story\, An Olympic Defector’s Chronicle.” This retired naval architect still designs and builds canoes\, kayaks\, sur skis and stand up paddle boards\, and competes in the Masters category for outrigger canoeing. \n  \n \n  \n  \nRoad to Tokyo 2020 programs are generously funded by: \n \n  \n  \nEvent presented by: \n \n
