SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Kyudo and Iaido Workshop at Redwood Kyudojo
DESCRIPTION:**SOLD OUT! Please email gillian@usajapan.org to be put on waiting list** \nTraditional Art in Modern Japan series \n**In-person event. This event is limited to 20 people\, so make sure you sign up quickly to reserve your spot!** \nKYUDO\, or the “Way of the Bow\,” is the Japanese martial art of archery and is practiced by thousands globally. This martial art traces its origins back to prehistoric times\, when the use of the bow and arrow proliferated. The system of Kyudo and its techniques have changed over time\, but the version that we see now has endured since the Edo period. Today\, Kyudo is primarily practiced for its educational and athletic aspects\, as a way to discipline your mind and body. \nIAIDO\, or the “Way of the Sword\,” is a martial art form developed as a defensive method to counter surprise attacks and enemy raids in fifteenth and sixteenth century Japan. The purpose of iaido was to slay an opponent with one stroke of the sword immediately after unsheathing. \nJoin us for a unique experience to practice both of these traditional martial art forms in the private Redwood Kyudojo surrounded by a tranquil forest of breathtaking Redwood trees. Participants will receive a comprehensive introduction of both Kyudo and Iaido and how they have evolved in the modern age\, diving into the unique development of these martial arts across the long history of Japan. We will also learn about the traditions\, equipment\, spiritual aspects\, differences\, and more! SUMMARY:Innovation Salon: Living With CFIUS - How Japanese companies can navigate US regulations governing foreign investment in US technology firms
DESCRIPTION:**Hybrid Event** \nEnglish Program \nIn 2018 the US Congress passed new legislation which significantly increased scrutiny of foreign direct investment by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The new law and a subsequent executive order have particularly serious implications for foreign investments in Silicon Valley start-ups because they lower the threshold of investments that can trigger CFIUS jurisdiction\, and also expand the range of business activities that can result in CFIUS review – in particular\, production of “critical technology\,” involvement in “critical infrastructure\,” and maintaining “sensitive personal data.” In addition\, under the new law some CFIUS filings are now mandatory\, with civil penalties for not making required filings. \nTo learn more about the implementation of the new law now in its fifth year and its implications for Japanese investors in Bay Area companies\, please join the Japan Society of Northern California for a hybrid in-person and online presentation on March 14 (Tuesday) in the US and March 15 (Wednesday) in Japan. We have a great panel of experts who will share perspectives of government regulators\, attorneys\, and investors with our audience. \nThis program will cover: \n\nThe impact of CFIUS regulations on Japanese\, Chinese and other foreign investors in Silicon Valley companies\nHow to know if an investment will be subject to review\nTimelines and processes for successfully completing a review\nHow investors can adapt their portfolio strategy in light of CFIUS\nExamples of how specific companies have navigated the process with technology startups in the Bay Area\n\nWe are delighted to introduce David Plotinsky and Toshi Otani as our two fantastic speakers. David Plotinsky from Morgan Lewis is the former acting chief of the US Department of Justice’s Foreign Investment Review Section\, who led DOJ’s work on some of the most sensitive and complex CFIUS cases\, and who now represents venture capital and private equity investors and global technology companies in CFIUS and other national security issues. Toshi Otani is a Japanese venture capital investor who has been investing in Bay Area start-ups for many decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details: \nDate/Time: March 14\, 2023\, 3:30pm \nVenue: Morgan\, Lewis & Bockius LLP | 1 Market Street\, San Francisco\, CA 94105\nEntrance 55 Spear St \n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n3:30-4:00 Registration\n4:00-4:08  Larry Greenwood | Board Chair\, Japan Society of Northern California – Welcome\, Context and Introduction of speakers\n4:08-4:18  David Plotinsky | Partner\, Morgan Lewis – What is CFIUS\, FIRRMA\, recent trends\n4:18-4:50  Moderated discussion\n4:50-5:10  Q&A \n5:10-6:00  Networking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n**Picture ID and proof of vaccine is required for entry**\n**Zoom link will be emailed to online guests after registration* \n\nRegister here!\n____ \nOur Amazing Speaker:\n\n \nDavid Plotinsky | Partner\, Morgan Lewis\nDavid’s work for clients brings to bear almost 25 years of federal government service.  Most recently\, he served as acting Chief\, and also as Principal Deputy Chief\, of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Foreign Investment Review Section\, which is housed in DOJ’s National Security Division.  In that role\, among other duties David led the Section’s participation on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS); DOJ’s leadership of the Committee for the Assessment of Foreign Participation in the United States Telecommunications Services Sector (CAFPUSTSS\, more commonly known as Team Telecom); compliance and enforcement matters arising from CFIUS and Team Telecom cases; and policy issues regarding national security reviews of U.S. outbound investment. SUMMARY:Why is Japan chopping down so many trees? Inside the Jingu Gaien and other redevelopment controversies gripping Japanese politics
DESCRIPTION:*Hybrid Event* \nWith sacred trees draped in rope at Shinto shrines\, and celebration of spring blossoms and fall colors\, trees play an important role in Japanese culture and in the image of Japan overseas. However\, controversies over cutting down thousands of trees are gripping Japan\, from big cities like Tokyo\, Osaka and Yokohama\, to rural mountain areas. Japan Society board member Rochelle Kopp\, who is currently spearheading an effort against the redevelopment of Jingu Gaien in Tokyo that will result in the loss of over 3000 trees\, will share what she has learned about the threats to Japanese trees and why trees are suddenly becoming a hot political issue in Japan. She will also share how she has drawn on her experience as a consultant to Japanese organizations to advocate for change in Japan. \nOur Amazing Speaker \nRochelle Kopp\nOrganizer\, Protect Jingu Gaien’s trees! Rochelle has devoted her career to understanding Japanese organizations\, how they make decisions and how to influence them. Her work as an activist trying to stop an ill-conceived and undemocratic development project being pushed forward by bureaucratic inertia and behind-the-scenes power brokering is the latest step in this journey. Rochelle holds a B.A. in History from Yale University and an M.B.A. in Finance and Business Policy from the Chicago Booth School of Business. \n  \n  \n\n▼Event Details\nDate & Time:\nMarch 22\, 2023  \nAgenda\n5:00pm Registration\n5:30pm Program\n6:30pm Networking\n7:00pm END \nLocation: Skadden\, Arps\, Slate\, Meagher & Flom LLP\n525 University Avenue / 14th Floor / Palo Alto\, CA 94301 \n*Hybrid Event – Online attendees: Webex link will be provided after registration* \nPrice: FREE \n*Light food and drinks are included. \n\n\n\nRegister here!____\n

SUMMARY:[Japan-U.S. Innovation Awards Tokyo Event] Making the Pivot: Japanese start-ups are more nimble than you may think
DESCRIPTION:*In-person Option Fully Booked\nJapan-U.S. （豪華朝食付き） \nThis event is part of a long running series on innovation produced by the Japan Society of Northern California (JSNC) and the American Chamber of Commerce\, Japan (ACCJ) Alternative Investment Committee. \nDynamism in the face of adversity has long been part of Silicon Valley\, and now we are seeing the same in Japan. Come learn how three well-known Japanese tech ventures are boldly responding to broad range of challenges. \nFor the past 13 years the JSNC and the Stanford Asia-US Technology Management Center have hosted the US-Japan Innovation Awards Symposium. Top executives from each company who received past awards – Euglena\, ispace\, and Mujin – will describe how they are making mid-course corrections or wholesale changes to their business plans. \nEuglena started out with the goal of building a venture to produce algae-based nutrition and food products; later it found a viable business in producing SAF – Sustainable Aviation Fuel. \nispace started designing and building lunar landers and rovers to provide commercial transportation services to the Moon\, contributing to NASA’s Artemis program–which aims to send humans back to the Moon–and beyond. Earlier this year\, in the world’s first fully commercial lunar landing attempt\, it achieved 8 of 10 milestones set by the company\, but resulted in a hard landing\, ending the mission. How will the young company respond to this challenge? \nMujin\, a robotic software company\, enjoyed impressive success in the Japanese market\, but decided to move out of its comfort zone and go global\, moving much of its leadership to the US. What were the factors that drove this decision? \n\n▼Event Details\nDate & Time:\nJune 12\, 2023 from 8:00-10:00 AM (Japan Time)\nJune 11\, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 PM (Pacific Time)\n\nVenue:\nTokyo American Club\, B2 Brooklyn Rooms\n2 Chome-1-2 Azabudai\, Minato City\, Tokyo 106-8649\n\nPricing:\n(Virtual) Member fee: ¥1\,100\n(Virtual) Guest fee: ¥2\,300\n(In-Person) Member fee: ¥5\,000\n(In-Person) Guest fee: ¥8\,400\n*In-person tickets include Breakfast \n\n– \nOUR AMAZING SPEAKERS \n \nMitsuru Izumo | Founder and President\, Euglena Co.\, Ltd. \nMitsuru Izumo is a graduate of the University of Tokyo\, having specialised in agricultural structural management.
