SUMMARY:Some Nostalgic Place: The Films of Isao Takahata at BAMPFA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive for a summer film series. \nDespite his sixty-year career as a director of hand-drawn animation\, Isao Takahata (1935–2018) would be the first to say\, “I myself really don’t draw.” He instead took pride in selecting talented animators and steering them toward his vision. Not being tied to his own style of drawing allowed him to transition from the maximalist fantasy of Pom Poko (1994) to the sketchlike\, comic-strip minimalism of My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)\, and the impressionistic watercolor and charcoal renderings of his final film\, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013). Of his process with the animators\, Takahata said\, “I really get involved in the details of their drawings\, and then have them draw and [I] check those drawings\, and work collaboratively in that fashion.” His attention to detail reveals itself in the reverence his films have for both the natural world and the present-tense\, unremarked-upon moments in life\, such as the family in Only Yesterday (1991) learning how to properly slice a pineapple. \nTakahata cofounded Studio Ghibli along with his protégé\, friend\, and rival Hayao Miyazaki in 1985. He worked slowly; Miyazaki referred to him as a giant sloth but was also quick to point out that “sloths actually have very sharp claws.” With his first animated feature for the studio\, he challenged the preconceived notions of the medium with the unrelenting antiwar film Grave of the Fireflies (1988). DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Roxie Theater for a screening of The Samurai and the Prisoner \n\nCelebrated Japanese horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure\, Serpent’s Path) explores a new path in this lush treatment of Honobu Yonezawa’s prizewinning historical novel\, detailing palace intrigue in the court of a samurai nobleman during the Azuchi era at the end of the 16th century. Turning against Oda Nobunaga\, the ruthless\, power-hungry warlord he previously served\, Araki Murashige (Masahiro Motoki\, of Departures) is besieged by Oda’s forces and bedevilled by a series of inexplicable crimes in his household. SUMMARY:Off the Beaten Path: A JET’s Eye View of Japan

All participants must be registered in advance. \nBeyond Tokyo’s neon streets and Kyoto’s ancient temples lies a Japan most travelers never see — one of remote islands\, hidden hot springs\, quirky local festivals\, and mountain trails known mainly to the people who live there. Discover these hidden corners through the eyesof those who know them best: alumni of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program\, who spent one to five years living and working in Japan’s smaller cities and towns. Through short\, personal presentations\, seven speakers will share the stories\, landscapes\, and local traditions that shaped their time abroad\, offering a fresh perspective for anyone dreaming of a trip beyond the well-worn “Golden Route.” \nThe evening includes a series of five-minute talks covering everything from island getaways to festival traditions and outdoor adventures\, followed by a Q&A session where attendees can dig deeper into the destinations that catch their interest. The program wraps up with a networking reception\, giving guests a chance to connect with the speakers and fellow Japan enthusiasts over snacks and refreshments. \nThis program is presented by the Japan Society of Northern California in collaboration with the JET Alumni Association of Northern California.
