Do you find yourself enjoying analyzing movies with others? Then this discussion class is for you! We are now accepting students for an exciting  7-week Japanese conversation class. During the course\, (1.5 hours/session)\, Sensei will facilitate the class to examine and discuss two Japanese films. These are the picks:  \n\n“Perfect Days” Directed by Wim Wenders (2023) \n“Junichiro Tanizaki on Japanese Aesthetics-In Praise of Shadows” \n\nStudents will be encouraged to talk in Japanese about these assignments while learning about the cultural and historical backgrounds of the contents. The first session will outline the seven weeks. Sakamoto-sensei\, specializing in conversation skills\, will review the lesson before each session\, followed by a film discussion. He is also a guest lecturer at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Ibaraki University\, and was previously a research fellow at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and University of Tokyo. He was also a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Science. His work has been cited in the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C and has been a panelist at the UNFCC’s COP24 Nuclear for Climate side event. Dr. Ling received his PhD in Chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley and his BS in Chemical Engineering at Caltech and his MS at the University of California at Santa Barbara. \n_ \n \nDr. Shutaro Takeda | Co-Founder & Chief Strategist\, Kyoto Fusioneering\nProf. Shutaro Takeda co-founded Kyoto Fusioneering in 2019. In 2018\, he founded JapanCraft21 to identify viable but vulnerable traditional Japanese crafts and assist in their revitalization. They started Shinmachiya Juku\, a free-of-charge school in Kyoto that teaches traditional construction skills to working carpenters and plasterers\, and a program that supports apprenticeship in vulnerable craft genres. Additionally\, they hold national contests in support of talented craftspeople. Their Craft Leader Program promotes the work of their 30 contest winners to date. Steve recently retired from Esprit Travel and Tours\, a U.S.-based Japanese culture-focused tour company that he founded in 1992 (www.esprittravel.com). At Esprit\, he connected travelers from around the world with talented and gracious Japanese people\, enabling them to encounter the richness and beauty of Japanese culture. Prior to that\, Steve ran a large U.S.-based wholesale plant growing operation with Japanese partners\, serving the landscape construction industry during California’s construction boom years.
