Coffee Life in Japan

October 28, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

In Japan, coffee gained popularity in the 20th century along with the increased fascination towards the West at the time. Many kissaten, or Japanese-style tea rooms that also serve coffee, opened during this period. Kissaten owners emphasized detail and accuracy in their brewing methods while creating a unique atmosphere to enjoy the coffee in.

Third-wave coffee culture focuses on delivering high-quality specialty coffee and is heavily influenced by innovative methods the kissaten owners used to improve the experience of drinking coffee. In the last few years, there has been a similar pattern in the import of third-wave coffee culture and foreign specialty cafes like Blue Bottle Coffee to Japan. The phenomenon represents a mutual influence between the U.S. and Japan as it transitioned from the second to third-wave coffee culture.

Join us for this special program to take a look at these reinventions that stem from the delicacy and precision held in Japanese culture.
