Every January the Japan Society of Northern California hosts Japan Outlook, a program that looks at political, security and economic trends in Japan and prospects for the US-Japan relationship in the coming year. This year will be full of challenges, including a likely recession and tech downturn, rising security threats in Asia, continuing hits on supply chains, food shipments and energy prices due to the Ukraine war and the urgent need to adopt green technologies faster. Never has the US-Japan relationship been more important. This year we will see at least three meetings between our Leaders, culminating in Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to San Francisco for the APEC Leaders Meeting in November, who will guide how our two countries address the significant challenges that 2023 will bring.

We are delighted to have a very special speaker for the Japan Outlook program this year, State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Affairs Mark Lambert who will be visiting the Bay Area that week. Secretary Lambert will talk with unparalleled expertise on how the US-Alliance will work to promote peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region. Don’t miss this program which Japan Society Chairman Larry Greenwood will moderate.

Mark Lambert | Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs

Mark Lambert has extensive experience in East Asia. He previously served in the International Organizations Bureau where he established an office aimed at protecting UN integrity from authoritarianism. As Special Envoy for North Korean Affairs, he participated in negotiations with the DPRK aimed at the denuclearization of that country and devised and implemented a global pressure campaign to enforce UN Security Council Resolutions. As Director of the Office of Korean Affairs he helped shape the response to ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests conducted by North Korea. Read more here.

Moderator, Larry Greenwood | Board Chair, Japan Society of Northern California & Senior Advisor, BowerGroupAsia
Larry Greenwood is a consultant advising on government relations and international economic policy, with expertise in trade, finance, development, and Asia. Larry was a career diplomat from 1976 to 2006 and served in a variety of positions in the State Department in Washington, D.C., and at U.S. embassies in Manila, Dakar, Tokyo, and Singapore. After retiring from the Foreign Service, he worked as vice president at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines, where he oversaw loan and grant operations in East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Island countries, and as Senior Managing Director for government relations in Asia for MetLife based in Tokyo. After moving to the Bay Area in 2015 he joined the BowerGroupAsia and served as President of the Japan Society of Northern California from 2016-2019.
