Ikebana【活花】 is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The word Ikebana means 活ける “ikeru” (arrange) and 花 “hana” (flower).  The origin of Ikebana may be traced back to the 6^th century when Buddhist priests offered ritual flowers to Buddha. Thanks to the development of Noh and tea ceremony, a new architectural style was introduced in Muromachi era, which required flowers need to be displayed at the alcove.  This created the oldest style of flower arrangement, called Tatebana (standing flower).  In the mid-15^th century, Senkei Ikenobo founded the first school, “Ikenobo”.  With the certain rules, the asymmetrical form and the use of empty space, an arranger expresses the beauty of flowers and the feelings in their own hearts.
Join us for a hands-on workshop and experience the basic elements of Ikebana in a friendly atmosphere.  Ms. Mitsuko Omachi, an Ikenobo instructor in San Francisco, will explain the basic rules and the essential techniques and introduce the relevant Japanese vocabulary during the course of the evening.  This is a great opportunity to learn Japanese expressions and culture in a fun setting.
To begin, Ms. Omachi and her assistants will provide a brief history and cultural background of Ikebana and Ikenobo Style in English. As they explain the fundamentals, participants will practice Japanese terminology specific to the flower arrangement. After her demonstration, participants will learn selection, cutting and arranging flowers followed by the rules of Ikenobo.  You will have time during the workshop to complete your own flower arrangement in a small vase to enjoy at home.

Ms. Mitsuko Omachi is a local Ikenobo sensei.  Her career of flower arrangement with Ikenobo began in her twenties in Yokohama, Japan. After ten years of training in Japan, she moved to San Francisco and resumed her practice in 1980.  She has been an instructor of Ikenobo at Soko-ji since 1990.  Her works are seen at various occasions such as Cherry Blossom Festival, Tanabata Ikebana Exhibition, and Ikenobo Center Exhibition.
