Past Event Details: Nippon Kobo: Music + Culture of Contemporary Japan

Join us on September 15, 2024, at Fort Mason in the SF Bay Area to be transported to the heart of contemporary Japan by Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble artist Haruka Fujii, in cooperation with Dice Tsutsumi, animator and founder of Emmy Award-winning studio Tonko House.
Nippon Kobo is an event series that brings together diverse artists, creators, entrepreneurs, and our local community. Guests will experience the Japanese concept of Seasons through a collaborative showcase of premium craft beer tasting, multimedia art installations, and a chamber music concert.
Nippon Koboは日本の音楽と文化のコラボレーションを通してアーティスト、クリエーター、起業家、ベイエリアのコミュニティが一堂に会するイベントシリーズです。Nippon Koboを率いるのは、グラミー賞受賞のシルクロード・アンサンブル・アーティストでパーカッショニストとして活躍する藤井はるか氏と、アカデミー短編アニメ賞にノミネート、エミー賞を受賞経験もあるトンコハウスの創設者であり、アニメクリエータの堤大介氏。9/15 のイベントでは「四季」をテーマに、プレミアム・クラフトビールのテイスティング、マルチメディア・アート・インスタレーション、室内楽コンサートなどのコラボレーション・ショーケースを San Francisco Fort Masonでお届けします。

Craft Beer Tasting & Japanese Snacks
Enjoy a complimentary beer tasting and meet CEO Shigeharu Asagiri of COEDO Brewery, a pioneer in Japanese craft brewing. Japanese snacks and food from Milk Cloud Bakery, Yatai Japanese, and Bernal Cutlery will also be available for purchase.
Art
A multimedia collaboration between Dice Tsutsumi, animator and founder of Emmy Award winning studio Tonko House, and the Nippon Kobo Ensemble’s performance of luminary composer Toru Takemitsu’s Seasons. An art installation by visual artist, Asaki Oda.
Chamber Music
A contemporary music concert program, featuring master compositions by iconic composers of Japan such as Toru Takemitsu and Joe Hisaishi. The highlight of the program includes a premiere performance of emerging Bay Area composer Erika Oba’s newest work.
Fireside Chats
Join conversations with leading composers, animators, entrepreneurs, and makers who represent contemporary Japanese music and culture.

Haruka Fujii | Creative Director
Percussionist from Grammy Award winning Silkroad Ensemble and internationally acclaimed advocate of modern Japanese music. Haruka’s performances can be seen locally in the Bay Area and around the world. Based in Albany, CA.

Dice Tsutsumi | Artistic Advisor
Animation artist and filmmaker. Dice is the co-founder and director of Academy Award nominated, and Annie and Emmy award winning animation studio Tonko House. He began his career at Pixar Animation Studios. Based in Berkeley, CA.
