Sayaka Shoji, Violin with the San Francisco Symphony

Arts from Japan spotlights acclaimed violinist Sayaka Shoji as she joins the San Francisco Symphony for a program of enormous expressive power. Shoji brings her renowned artistry to Respighi’s spellbinding Concerto gregoriano, summoning the full grandeur of its medieval plainsong reimagined with 20th-century pizzazz. French conductor Marie Jacquot makes her debut leading the orchestra, opening with the first SF Symphony performances of Augusta Holmès’s Wagnerian-scaled symphonic poem Andromède, and closing with Prokofiev’s savage, sensual Romeo and Juliet, a score as ambiguous and passionate as the Shakespeare tragedy that inspired it.
