Join Women’s Impact Network “WIN” Chair, Tracy Gopal, to welcome special guest Naomi Koshi, former Mayor of Otsu, Shiga Prefecture. Ms. Koshi became Mayor of Otsu in 2012 and is the youngest woman to have been elected as mayor of a city in Japan.
At the time of her election, only 2% of women served as mayor (now 3%), and Naomi quickly became a role model for women in Japan. During her time in office, Ms. Koshi advocated for gender equality measures that would make it easier for women to stay in the workforce after having children, such as improving access to childcare and parental leave. Naomi Koshi ended her term as Mayor of Otsu in January, 2020. Ms. Koshi studied law at Hokkaido University and later attended law school at Harvard. She practiced corporate law at Nishimura & Asahi, the largest law firm in Tokyo and Debevoise & Plimpton in NYC. Since she introduced new technologies such as self-driving buses and AI bully prediction system during her term, she is now interested in tech startups. While this is not a formal program, we hope to welcome Naomi’s visit to San Francisco as she explores the opportunities for her to put her talents to work. Naomi will continue to be a role model and leader who offers practical support for women in the workforce.
The WIN network continues to support the mission of “Building Community and Opportunity” by providing a venue where members can support one another in planning and managing their best career life. Women in Startups, women in the boardroom and women returning to work are daily news these days. Please join the conversation. Everyone is welcome.
