Our popular calligraphy workshop is back this fall!  Let’s learn about one of the traditional Japanese arts, 書道 “shodō” (calligraphy), the art of writing kanji and kana characters with an ink-dipped brush.
With an overview of the history of Japanese calligraphy, the sensei Ms. Yukiko Tanaka will demonstrate how to write Japanese characters with fude (brush) and sumi (ink).  In this hands-on workshop, students will try their hand at the art of lines and feel the beauty of Japanese writing.  The instructor will introduce some key Japanese vocabulary used in the art of calligraphy.  This is a great opportunity to learn Japanese expressions and culture in a fun setting.
This event has limited space and registration is first come first served.  Please register early to ensure your spot in the workshop.  No previous experience in shodō or Japanese language is necessary.
Ms. Yukiko Tanaka has been teaching Japanese calligraphy over three decades at various educational organizations throughout the Bay Area including the JCCCNC (Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California).  She also teaches Japanese calligraphy at Millbrae High School as well as the Cherry Blossom Festival in Cupertino.  She is a co-chair of the Japanese Culture Festival Committee of the City of Millbrae.
