スタンフォード大学により設置された米国の非営利科学研究組織「SRI International」からスピンオフしたスタートアップ企業。SRI時代に、米国国防高等研究計画局（DARPA）から委託されたプログラムで開発した技術をベースに、ロボット工学・技術をアパレルデザインに融合させた「パワード・クロージング」の商品化に成功、産業界への適用可能性が高く、体を使った作業の多い建設技能労働者の負担軽減を目的とした産業向け製品には高い需要が見込まれている。

量子ドットレーザ技術の事業化を目指す先駆者として、通信・産業・医療・民生用の広い分野で新しい半導体レーザソリューションを開発・提供してきた。網膜走査型レーザーディスプレイの商品化に世界で初めて成功し、その医療・ヘルスケア応用を進めるとともに、本技術による拡張現実を人間の社会と産業活動に導入し、人類の視覚の拡張と再定義を目指している。

「死ぬまで自分でトイレに行きたい」という望みを叶える、画期的セルフケア、DFree（ディー・フリー）を開発販売中。世界初の排泄予測デバイス、DFree は超音波センサーを用いて膀胱の変化を捉えることで排尿のタイミングをスマートデバイスに通知し、アクシデントを防ぐ。

イノベーションを具現化する経験を豊富に持ち、世界中で見られる高齢化社会に対する専門家として、スタートアップや大企業、投資家にアドバイスを提供、高齢化社会のあり方を変えていくため に20年近く尽力してきた。米国やアジア各国で、チェンジマ ネジメント(変革管理)など、企業における戦略的なイノベー ション戦略の開発や導入を担う要職を歴任した。 直近では、1日あたり5万5,000人以上の患者に対応する、急性期治療後のケア(PAC)で米国最大手ジェネシスのグロー バルレベルでのイノベーションでリーダーシップを発揮した。また、高齢化に特化したインキュベーター「Aging2.0」では 、エグゼクティブ・イン・レジデンス(客員経営者)を務める。 作業療法士としての専門知識と組織運営・臨床・起業の経験と融合させて、世界規模のデザインやシステムイノベーション向上を目指している。世界各地のコミュニティーの健康 や生活の改善を目的としたバイタリティ・イニシアチブの一 環として、中国のイノベーションセンターの企画を担当。さまざまな団体で顧問や役員を務めるほか、健康長寿や高齢化におけるイノベーション などの講演多数。

高齢化と人口減少という日本が抱える二つの課題が本格化していく中、今後十年間の間で直面する課題解決に日本やシリコンバレーではどのようなテクノロジーが創出されているでしょうか? 日本の創造性、イノベーション、日本が直面している人口構成上の課題へのユニークな視点、そして、シリコンバレーの躍動的な新テクノロジー開発と起業家のエコシステムが生み出す創造的なアイデアやアイデア、収益性のある事業への転換について理解を深めるプログラム・シリーズです。

Human Enhancement for an Aging Society: How Society 5.0 can address the Aging of Japan

The rapid pace of aging in Japan and the shrinking of its labor force present considerable social, political and technological challenges.  The Japan Society of Northern California, with the support of the US Embassy and the Keizai Koho Center, are proud to present the second Japan Silicon Valley Innovation Partnership Speaker Program, which will explore how technology can help address those challenges.  In this program, we will present an American and a Japanese start-up company that are developing technologies that will enhance human function for both aging workers and retired people.  The two start-ups, each of which is active in both the US and Japanese market, will talk about how linking humans and robotics can open up new human potential as people age.  Please come hear these exciting stories that are likely to impact your companies and your own life.

Sarah leads market entry and strategic partnerships for Seismic, a company who designs apparel integrated with discreet robotics to create powered clothing with intelligent wearable strength. Their first products will provide strength and power augmentation for everyday core wellness and mobility enhancement. At the core of Seismic’s culture is a human-centered, biomechanics informed design approach. Their design and development team, a unique hybrid of engineering and apparel design like no other ever assembled, includes: fashion designers, biomechanists, data scientists, software engineers, physical therapists, and user experience designers, to name only a few. Seismic has been recognized as a 2018 Global Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.

Dr. Mitsuru Sugawara, President and CEO of QD Laser, Inc., Japan

Mitsuru is President and CEO of QD Laser, Inc., Japan, which has developed and commercialized a variety of the state-of-the-art semiconductor lasers. The products extend over micromachining, biophotonics, machine vision, quantum-dot lasers for silicon photonics, and retinal imaging display for medical welfare application. Dr. Sugawara has authored and co-authored over 100 journals and conference papers, presented over 30 invited talks at major conferences, and published a book entitled “Self-Assembled InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dots.” Amongst other prestigious awards and recognitions, he is the recipient of Japan Prime Minister Award 2006, IEEE Aron Kressel Award for “pioneering contributions to the development of temperature-insensitive quantum dot lasers, and their commercialization and mass-production for optical communication systems.”, and SPIE PRISM AWARDS Winner for Retinal Imaging Display.

Atsushi Nakanishi founded Triple W in 2015 in Tokyo. A graduate of UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, he worked in a consulting firm supporting new businesses in both tech and healthcare field, and participated in Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers program before founding Triple W. His recent literary work, “Coming out in Ten Minutes, “ outlines the development story of the D-Free toilet timing technology that Triple W produces.
