Japan’s Digital Transformation: Opportunities and Challenges

This program is presented by the Japan Society of Northern California in coopération with the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.

One of then-Prime Minister Suga’s first actions upon assuming office in 2020 was to announce the goal of complete digitalization of government by 2025. A year later his successor Fumio Kishida likewise made the digital transformation of Japan a priority of his new administration. In February 2021, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and McKinsey partnered to create a groundbreaking report, drawing on the experience of American companies, that identifies “Big Moves” Japan can pursue to achieve its DX goals. Japan Digital Agenda 2030 calls for actions to promote digital transformation in abroad range of sectors including manufacturing, retail financial services, healthcare and government services.

Please join us to hear three senior business executives talk about the findings of this report and the important market opportunities that Japan’s big push into digital transformation creates for American and Japanese companies ranging from large MNCs to small start-ups. David West, President of Cisco Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China, is an experienced Asia-hand and technologist who also served as the ACCJ’s Vice Chair for the report project. Kazuhiro Gomi is the President and CEO of NTT Research Inc located in Sunnyvale, is responsible for developing new technologies that will take NTT into the future. James Miller, who is the Co-Chair of the Digital Transformation Committee and past chair of the JDA2030 Task Force for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, leads the team developing and executing public policy efforts driving the adoption of cloud computing in Japan. James Miller | Co-Chair, Digital Transformation Committee, JDA2030 Task Force past Chair, American Chamber of Commerce in Japan

James Miller is the Co-Chair of the Digital Transformation Committee and past chair of the JDA2030 Task Force for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.

In past positions, he served as Senior Attorney Advisor in the Office of Engineering and Technology, Associate CIO for Mobile and Data Strategy at the Federal Communications Commission, adjunct professor of Law at the American University, Washington College of Law and as a 2004-2006 Mansfield Fellow. 

He is a cum laude graduate of the Washington College of Law, American University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and East-Asian studies (honors) from the University of Kansas. He is a Japanese bilingual and frequently speaks and publishes in Japanese for business, legal, and technical audiences in Japan.

Dave West | President, Cisco Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China

This group comprises seven organizations operating across a diverse set of markets: Australia and New Zealand, ASEAN, India and SAARC, Korea, Japan, Greater China, and Service Provider. In this role, he is responsible for developing Cisco’s strategy, accelerating business growth, and ensuring Cisco APJC is the most trusted and relevant IT solutions partner and provider in the industry.  Dave is a 20-year Cisco veteran with over 25 years of experience in the ICT industry. His most recent role was President and General Manager for Cisco Japan, where he managed all aspects of the Japanese market, and before that, led Worldwide Sales for Enterprise Networks, with responsibility for the sales, solutions, and engineering motions to deliver innovation and transformation across Cisco’s core portfolio.

Kazuhiro Gomi | President and CEO of NTT Research Inc.

Mr. Gomi is the President and CEO of NTT Research, Inc., which is the global R&D arm of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT). The organization was created in April 2019, to conduct basic research in Physics & Informatics (quantum theory and its application to information processing), next-generation cryptography & information security, and medical & health informatics. Before assuming this position, he was a member of the Board of Directors for NTT Communications Corporation and led NTT America as its President and CEO for more than nine years from New York City. Mr. Gomi has been an NTT employee for more than 30 years, engaged in R&D projects, business development activities in Malaysia and the U.S., and Global Internet business operations. Mr. Gomi received a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Keio University.
