It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Michi Kaifu, Japan Society of Northern California’s long-serving Board Member and dear friend. Michi passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 17, 2025, due to complications following cancer surgery. She was 65 years old.
Michi was a dedicated, kind, and passionate member of our Board of Directors, who had an immediate impact after she joined in 2017. She gave her friendship, skills, and energy to us in many ways – serving on multiple committees, sharing her enthusiasm for Japanese business and culture by organizing a variety of programs, and serving as a speaker and moderator at many of our events.
In recent months, Michi created and participated in a wide range of programs, including an introduction to Japanese theater, performances of kyogen and Nihonbuyo, a demonstration of iaido (Japanese swordsmanship), and panels on Deep Tech, AI, and Silicon Valley, to name a few. Whatever the subject, Michi always brought contagious enthusiasm, deep knowledge, and a collaborative spirit that drew people in and made them feel part of something special.
We really could not have asked for a better colleague or more loyal friend – she was always ready to lend a hand when needed, provide well-considered counsel when asked, and share her ideas and energy with care, good humor, and passion. Her untimely passing leaves a deep hole in our activities and our hearts.
On behalf of the Japan Society of Northern California, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband Ryoji Koike and sons Teppei and Shumpei – and to her many friends in the JSNC family and community.
The family has graciously suggested that those who wish to honor Michi’s memory consider making a donation to the Japan Society of Northern California. We plan to put together a special program that recognizes her contributions and interests in the near future.
