Alexander (“Sandy”) Calhoun passed away at the age of 100 on November 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of accomplishment that will live on for many years. Sandy, the President of the Japan Society of Northern California from 1968-1970, was a leader in business and cultural relations between the Bay Area and Japan since he first went to Japan to open the offices of the law firm Graham and James in 1955.  Upon his return to the Bay Area, he and his late wife Conne became active members of the Society in the years when the Society was rebuilding after its suspension during the war and Japan was reemerging as a prosperous and peaceful democracy with fast growing ties to the Bay Area. For the next six decades, Sandy worked tirelessly to promote ever-stronger bonds of friendship between Japan and the Bay Area and in 2006 the Society was delighted to have the opportunity to honor him with our “Lifetime Achievement Award” at our annual award of honor Gala dinner. Over those years Sandy Calhoun served as the Japan Society’s Board member, President, supporter and mentor. We will never forget his commitment, his energy, and his kindness.
